In 1910 the artist made many drawings from the daughter of her cook, who appeared to be the ideal model for Catherine Earnshaw. She was wearing the slippers of Sir William Clarke Hall's father. These drawings afterwards formed the basis of illustrations to Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights (see N05273). The broader style of this drawing is typical of her later period. There are several versions of this composition (see reverse of A01064).
