This print is of a landscape by Thomas Gainsborough held in the private collections of Dr Thomas Monro and George Hibbert. They were reproduced with care. Etching was chosen as the technique, as it best imitates Gainsborough’s expressive handling of paint. Watercolour was later added by hand. They were published in A Collection of Prints Illustrative of English Scenery by John Laporte and William Frederick Wells. Some 30 years after Gainsborough’s death, his paintings had become synonymous with an idyllic vision of the British countryside.
