Clive Gardiner 1891–1960
T00675 Churchyard, Old Town, St. Mary’s IV ?1956
Not inscribed.
Oil on canvas, 10 x 14 (25.5 x 35.5).
Presented by the artist’s family 1964.
Exh: Arts Council, August-September 1963 and tour 1963–64 (58).
The artist’s widow wrote (9 July 1964) that the date 1956 was probably correct, though she had previously suggested 1958: ‘We were all a bit vague as to dates, I am afraid—my late husband went to the Scilly Isles every year in early July for two weeks painting, for about 20 years and he never met another artist there, which pleased him greatly ... I never accompanied him to the Scilly Isles as he preferred to paint alone.’ The Arts Council exhibition of 1963 included three other pictures of the Churchyard (hence the number) as well as several views of the harbour and quay of St. Mary’s.
Published in The Tate Gallery Report 1964–1965, London 1966.
