Catalogue entry

Julio González 1876-1942

T01599 Paysan au Fagot (Peasant with a Bundle of Sticks) c.1910-23

Not inscribed
Pastel on off-white paper, 9 7/8 x 12 13/16 (25.2 x 32.6) Presented by Roberta González 1972
Lit: Josette Gibert, Julio González Dessins: Scènes Paysannes (Paris 1975), p.94 repr. (dated c.1910-23); the drawing at the top of p.95 is incorrectly stated to be the one in the Tate

Gibert, op. cit., pp.94-6 reproduces this and four related pastels of peasants carrying bundles of sticks with a note that the way in which the pastel is used recalls González's work of c.1906-10, but the greater firmness of the drawing and the very different colour range from the pastels executed between those dates suggest that they were done in the period 1910-23. The drawing most closely related to this is one of a man in a very similar pose and setting, but with the background less finished. Then there are two of the man accompanied by a woman also carrying a bundle of sticks, and finally one of the woman alone.

[All the drawings by Julio González given to the Tate are authenticated on the back by his daughter Roberta González and inscribed with a title and date, or approximate date. The titles are used in the catalogue entries, but the dating has been made more precise wherever possible. (Julio González's drawings are usually dated from about 1934 onwards, but the great majority of the early drawings are undated).]
