Purchased from the artist (Clarke Fund) 1933.
Exh: N.E.A.C., April–May 1926 (210), as ‘The Lagoon, Sunset’.
The artist wrote (23 December 1956): ‘“Sunset on the Lagoon, Venice” was painted there when in 1925 I had a studio temporarily for some months and a gondola always at my service from which I did most of my pictures during that period in Venice. This painting painted in that way from the water was one of the slighter pictures done at that time.’
