P77070 is cut from a circular wood block, as are five other wood engravings by Hermes. These other examples are ‘The Five Senses' 1934 (repr. Gertrude Hermes, exh. cat., Whitechapel Art Gallery, 1967, [p.18]), ‘Autumn Fruits' 1935, ‘Clasped Hands' 1939, ‘The Warrior's Tomb' 1941 (repr. ibid., [p.18]) and ‘Avocets' 1948. The aquatic and womb-like nature of the environment which surrounds the naked male figure is discussed in the entries P77067, P77068
