T00348 GREY DAY BY THE SEA, FEBRUARY 1960 1960
Inscr. on back of canvas, ‘Hilton 50×40 Feb. '60 Grey Day by the Sea’.
Canvas, 50×40 (127×102).
Purchased from the Waddington Galleries (Grant-in-Aid) 1960.
Exh: Waddington Galleries, May 1960 (2).
Repr: John Rothenstein, The Tate Gallery, 1962, p.261.
The artist wrote (n.d., May 1960): ‘In titling my pictures I took a look at them and wrote down the first thing that came into my head. If nothing came I didn't give a title. The picture has no more or less to do with the sea or grey days than any other picture in my exhibition though naturally I hope a little of sea and land and grey days and bright days comes into all of them.’
Another inscription written horizontally on the back of the canvas and crossed out, ‘40×50 May'56 Hilton’, suggests that this picture was painted over an earlier one on the same canvas.
