T02037 STUDY FOR ‘APHRODITE IN AULIS’ c.1938–40
Not inscribed
Pencil on paper 12 7/8 × 8 1/4 (32.8 × 20.8)
Presented by the Trustees of the Artist's Estate 1976.
This undated drawing, found among David Jones's effects, is the only known study for T02036. The ‘earthiness’ of the goddess and comparative simplicity of the design in relation to the finished work suggest that it represents David Jones's thinking about ‘Aphrodite’ at an early stage (see discussion above for T02036).
