This is one of the last major portfolios of woodcuts that Judd produced before his death in 1994. In its examination of the relationship of the edge to the centre, it reprises the theme of one of his other major suites of 1988, also shown here. In this later group however, Judd divided the rectangular space of the paper in exactly the same way for each image, allowing the different colours to provide the variations within the suite. The vibrantly polychrome nature of this group is indicative of Judd's increasing use of colour in his later three-dimensional work.
