The artist explained in a letter of 9 May 1969 that the title means that this was his 21st work made in 1959.

'At that period my work was entirely non-figurative. Nevertheless it was, as always, substantially founded upon reality (at least this was my aim) though without any formal objective representation. It was my intention to create new beings, objects, landscapes, situations just as real as those which exist, but "new" "my own".'

The monograph on his work by José de Castro Arines, Lucio (Madrid 1961), incorrectly reproduces another but very similar painting 'Ochre on Panel' 1959 as in the Tate Gallery.
