The reverse bears a Roberson's stamp which suggests that the canvas was bought at some point in the years 1937–9 inclusive. The character of the paint is consistent with the picture's having been painted in the same period. Lady Monnington writes of this work (letter, 22 May 1986):
I do not remember Tom painting it, so I think it must have been painted in the late 1930s before I met him, and it looks like a view down the valley below Leyswood [his home, near Groombridge] -a valley he often painted in.
