Lucignano is a small village in Tuscany. It lies fifteen miles south, south-west of Arezzo. Nicholson made two other drawings in 1974 of towns in Tuscany-‘Certaldo’ and ‘Siena’. All three places are a short distance from each other. Speaking of these line drawings and others like them Nicholson said ‘It's not the drawing that is difficult but finding and recognising the mood. When in this right mood one knows well that something will come’ (Preface to catalogue Ben Nicholson Galerie Beyeler, Basel.)
