N02997 THE ANGLER c. 1912
Inscr. ‘Orpen’ b.r.
Canvas, 36×34 (91·5×86·5).
Presented by Francis Howard through the National Loan Exhibitions Committee 1914.
Exh: International Society, autumn 1914 (among works purchased for presentation to the Tate).
Lit: Konody and Dark, 1932, p.277.
Repr: Studio, LXXXII, 1921, facing p.187 (in colour).
The model was Mrs J. M. Hone. Orpen painted another portrait of her, ‘The Blue Hat’, in the same costume (repr. Pickle, 1923, pl.17) in 1912, which is presumably also the date of ‘The Angler’.
