After leaving the Royal College of Art in 1967, Panting quickly established a reputation as both a sculptor and teacher. Although independently titled Untitled sketch models for steel sculpture, these works were created in their own right and not necessarily produced to be small models for larger sculptures. Each made from flat rods of soldered steel, they are restrained and architectural spatial constructions with a physicality and presence belied by their size, and show how line can suggest a shifting perception of mass and volume.
