One of the originators of British pop art, Paolozzi is known for sculptures and collages that incorporate materials from a range of disparate sources. In 1985 he was invited to mix a selection of his own works with the ethnographic displays at the Museum of Mankind in London. Mayan Dog was based on an illustration of a Mayan sculpture that Paolozzi found in a book. It was given a varnish finish to create an antique appearance.
