The artist has identified the sitters in this imaginative reconstruction of the Vorticists celebrating at the Restaurant de la Tour Eiffel (see T00230) as follows: from left to right, seated, are Cuthbert Hamilton, Ezra Pound, William Roberts, Wyndham Lewis (in the centre of the group), Frederick Etchells and Edward Wadsworth; standing in the doorway are Jessie Dismoor and Helen Saunders, with the waiter, Joe, to the right of centre; Rudolph Stulik, the proprietor of the restaurant from 1908 to 1937, stands on the extreme right. The painting was worked on in 1961 and early 1962 (information from the artist, 3 July 1962).
It should be recalled that in June 1915 the first and only exhibition of the Vorticist Group was held at the Doré Galleries, and in addition to the artists shown in William Roberts's group the following were invited to exhibit: Gaudier-Brzeska, Bernard Adeney, Lawrence Atkinson, David Bomberg, Duncan Grant, Jacob Kramer and C.R.W. Nevinson.
The volumes of Blast which feature in the composition are of Blast No.1, published in June 1914.
