Rückriem is one of the leading middle generation German sculptors. He has been making stone sculptures by means of splitting and cutting since 1968. In 1989 the Tate Gallery acquired a major, recent, four-part sculpture by Rückriem as a gift of the Patrons of New Art. The artist then offered a matching gift of this earlier work made by a different process. The larger sculpture consists of four vertical stacks each split three times, and was made using a drill and bolster. In 'Double Piece' he used only a hammer. The larger work is displayed parallel and close to the wall but 'Double Piece' may stand in the centre of a room. In both works Ruckriem's respect for and love of the integrity of the stone is apparent.
