Exh: Pre-Raphaelites; Art Nouveau. Exhibition of Drawings and Watercolours, Maas Gallery, June–July 1964 (116, repr.).
This drawing belonged to Ashby Sterry, who is among those acknowledged by Mrs. Esther Wood as having allowed works from their collections to be reproduced in her book on the artist, 1896. A drawing of a bank of earth with tree roots and undergrowth, ‘A Study—Fairlight’, signed and dated 1870, is reproduced in Wood (op. cit., p. 35) and shows a subject similar to T00685, for which the date c. 1855 has been suggested by J. S. Maas.
Published in The Tate Gallery Report 1964–1965, London 1966.
