Catalogue entry
P07400 FOUR KNOTS 1976
Inscribed ‘R Smith 76’ bottom centre and ‘18/50’
Lithograph with collage on folded sheet, printed by Ian Lawson and published by Bernard Jacobson, 27 3/4×30 1/8 (70.5×76.5)
Purchased from Bernard Jacobson (Grant-in-Aid) 1980
From 1968 onwards Smith had used folded or layered paper for his prints. He also used fixings - usually paper clips and from 1973 onwards, string-in preference to adhesives, intending always to keep the materials and structure of his work self-evident. ‘Four Knots’ is one of a small group of individual prints made in 1976–7; characteristics of this print, the deep parallel folds and the colour in a transparent wash with dribbles, were developed in ‘Two of a Kind, Three of a Kind’ [P07401-P07403; incomplete].
