The black mark dominates Soulages' work, whether in painting or printmaking. Even when small in size, it reflects the physical movement of the artist's body and the breadth of his gesture. From 1947, Soulages was influenced by the brushstrokes of Chinese calligraphy. His austere, elegant works were critically acclaimed in Paris and he became one of the leading figures of gestural abstraction.
