N05136 GOODWOOD, 25–28 JULY 1939 1939
Inscr. ‘Lord Wykham’ t.l., ‘Cavalry’ t.r., ‘Goodwood 25–28 July’ b.c., and ‘F.T.’ b.r.
Pen, wash and pastel, 16 1/2×21 (42×53·5).
Purchased from the artist (Knapping Fund) 1940.
The Goodwood Races take place from Tuesday to Friday at the end of July; the dates 25–8 July inscribed on the drawing are correct for 1939, a date confirmed by the artist (letter of 19 January 1957). The scene presumably represents Lord Wykham's private tent, with his Lordship seated behind the table and surrounded by friends and relatives.
