In the upper half is a view of a bay framed by cliffs to the left and a building, possibly on a quay or pier to the right, with a small boat at the centre; compare the sketch on folio 18 recto (D35520). Above the main view appears to be a separate outline of distant cliffs. Below, inverted, is a rougher sketch of what appears to be a coastal view. Both sketches appear to have counterparts on folio 16 verso opposite (D35517). See the sketchbook’s Introduction for the many slight coastal views scattered through it.
There is some brown staining at the gutter, possibly indicating water damage in the 1928 Tate flood.
