Catalogue entry

Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, this is the same ruined building as on folio 37 verso opposite (D02656), seen from farther off. More drawings of what is apparently the same building occur in pencil studies on leaves from the disbound Smaller Fonthill sketchbook, listed as nos.52–54 in the checklist of drawings in other collections in that sketchbook’s Introduction (see the ‘Architectural and Other Subjects c.1797–1807’ section of this catalogue); all are now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (respectively nos.59.792, 07.860, and 07.859).
