Catalogue entry

The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally. As identified by Cecilia Powell,1 the view is towards the southern corner of Bamberg’s sloping Domplatz, flanked by the Romanesque Cathedral and the picturesquely gabled Renaissance Alte Hofhaltung (now a museum). It is notable that Turner lightly indicated the second of the Romanesque spires on the left, but only one of the similarly proportioned but more elaborate Gothic spires towards the right.
For numerous other Bamberg views in this sketchbook, see under folio 19 recto (D31312).2
