Catalogue entry

This sketch of Bass Rock is taken from the east and concentrates on the area at the south of the island (at the left) where a ruined castle and fortifications stand above the lowest point. Unlike many of the other sketches in the sequence, Turner uses shading as well as vertical and serrated lines to show the topography and geology of the rock. There is a similar view on the following page of this sketchbook (folio 18; D13355; CLXV 18).
