Catalogue entry

With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled the centre of this page with a cursorily drawn jumble of buildings lining a river or canal. Turner made several sketches of the Parisian riverside in the present volume providing a possible location for this scene. If so, then the dome on the horizon could belong to Les Invalides or the Panthéon. For comparisons, see the list of Parisian riverside studies in the sketchbook Introduction.
