Catalogue entry

Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the two landscape sketches here, one above the other, are continuations from folio 34 verso opposite (D27789); the subjects appear to be low coastlines with buildings and cliffs; the location or locations are as yet undetermined. There are various studies of fishermen, fish markets and coastal views in the sketchbook, particularly on adjacent pages at this end, as set out in the Introduction.
Technical notes:
There is heavy staining, which appears to stem from proximity to the leather overlaps and brass clasp inside the back cover (D40748), perhaps made worse by damp at some stage.
