Catalogue entry

In these five swiftly executed views Turner studies the Burg Thurandt overlooking the village of Alken on the Moselle from various angles. The artist has inscribed a note which appears to read ‘Wall [?Mending]’ at bottom left, though the sketch is too small and slight to see figures at work in this way. For further drawings of the castle see Tate D19806, D19808–D19809, D20267, D28305, D28307, D28571–D28577, D28949, D29023; Turner Bequest CCXVI 128, 129–129a, CCXXII H, CCLXXXIX 8, 9, CCXCI 18–21, CCXCII 2, 72.
