Catalogue entry

Turner has used this page to produce three small squared-off views of Calais Harbour, with a rough study of a group of fishermen at left. The lowermost prospect of Calais includes the steeple of the Church of Notre-Dame, the Colonne Louis XVIII, the lighthouse or Tour de Guet, and the Hotel de Ville. At top right is a tiny view of the Fort Rouge (see Tate D20042; Turner Bequest CCXVI 250). Parallel to the long edge of the page is an even more minuscule sketch of a coastline with the barely legible inscription ‘Coast of England’.
