With the sketchbook inverted and continued from folio 56 verso (D17604) is a view of Edinburgh from the castle. This part of the composition looks north-east to the New Town with the spire of St Andrew’s Church (now St Andrew’s and St George’s) and the Melville Monument. In the foreground is the roof of the Portcullis Gate to Edinburgh Castle.
