Catalogue entry

With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page with a depiction of Coutances in Normandy. The crumbling medieval aqueduct crosses the centre of the page while the cathedral sits on the brow of the hill in the top left-hand corner. Multiple pages in this volume feature sketches of this settlement and its monuments, a list of which is included in the sketchbook introduction.
