Display caption
Like many of Turner’s views of Britain, this scene contrasts the modern and the historic. The smoking factory tower, on the far left, is compared
and contrasted with the spires of the old churches in the town itself. The pastoral landscape in the foreground adds a further contrast: that between the country and the city. This print
was from the series Picturesque views
of England and Wales.
