Catalogue entry

The uppermost view depicts Dinant looking upstream from the eastern bank of the Meuse, and the lowermost shows the same city from a distance. The Castle of Crèvecoeur is recorded at centre, as it overlooks the village of Bouvignes and the Church of Saint-Lambert (see also Tate D19654–D19655, D19658; Turner Bequest CCXVI 52a–53, 54a). This view is annotated with the inscriptions ‘E foreground’ (in front of the small house on the riverbank), ‘B’, for Bouvignes, and ‘D’ for Dinant.
