Never has the sheer labour of the technical process of engraving been
more apparent than in these large single plates. An image engraved to this size on the hard-wearing surface of steel would have taken at least two years to execute.
These prints after Turner's works were circulated in the commercial market
with the effect that his work reached
a far wider audience and his images became famous in his own lifetime. The prints however are undoubtedly works
of art in their own right and not merely reproductions.
