This battle is described in antique literature and in the marbles from the Parthenon frieze, which were sent to England by Lord Elgin in 1804. Turner's sources for this composition study were probably literary rather than sculptural, but he later inspected the marbles with enthusiasm at Lord Elgin's London house.
