Flint Castle stands on the estuary
of the River Dee, North Wales. In the
1790s Turner made three sketching trips to North Wales. He visited the castle
on all three occasions and used it as
a subject for several later watercolours. The watercolour for this engraving demonstrates Turner's technical and visual mastery. J H Kernot, the engraver
of this design, has wonderfully translated the watery morning sunlight and
the brilliant reflection of the sun
on calm water.
