This is the right half of a double-page spread continued from folio 290 recto opposite (D11886), recording the view from the Sutton Bank road, looking west and north to Gormire Lake with Whitestone Cliff at the right. There is a similar view on another double-page spread in this sketchbook (running from the back, folios 294 recto and 293 verso; D11894, D11893). The inscription ‘Hambleton’ could equally relate to the Hambleton Hills, of which Sutton Bank is the western escarpment, or to Hambleton House, which stands a little way off the left of the road at the top of the bank.
For general notes on Sutton Bank in this sketchbook see folio 295 recto (D11896).
