Catalogue entry

With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page with a study of the Hôtel de Ville at Paris. There are multiple drawings of this edifice in the pages of this volume, a list of which is included in the sketchbook Introduction. These formed the basis for an engraved vignette in a new edition of Walter Scott’s Life of Napoleon Buonaparte (1834–36); see Tate impression T04967.
