Catalogue entry

The subject, with a castle or hill town in the middle distance, is currently unidentified, but may be Italian. Turner’s slightly unclear inscription may indicate the vicinity of Rogno, in the mountainous region north-east of Bergamo. See also Tate D33781 (Turner Bequest CCCXLI 100).
See the Introduction to this section for further brief discussion and dating.
Verso:
Blank; inscribed by John Ruskin in pencil ‘233 | O’ bottom right.
