The subject is unidentified, but is probably Italian; see the Introduction to this section for further brief discussion and dating. The distinctive profile of the peaks on the skyline on the right here are seen closer in Tate D33783 and D33786 (Turner Bequest CCCXLI 102, 105). Turner’s inscriptions presumably indicates a place name but has yet to be fully deciphered.
