Catalogue entry

Based on a reading of Turner’s inscription at the top of this page as referring to Kingsgate (as on folio 2 verso; D26098), these three sketches may depict the coast of Kent around the Isle of Thanet. Sketches elsewhere in the book depict Margate (folio 2 verso), Broadstairs and Ramsgate (folio 31 verso; D26155), along with views much further up the east coast, suggesting that the artist returned from his Scottish trip by sea from Edinburgh, and also used the book during a trip from London to Kent. The sequence continues on the reverse of this page (folio 62 verso; D26216) with sketches of the coast and of shipping.
