Catalogue entry

The diminutive sketch at the uppermost register appears to be of Luxembourg, most probably of the heavily fortified Bock plateau. The unsteady pencil strokes at right and left are continuations of Turner’s so-called ‘carriage sketches’: the rather unruly jottings made by the artist as he was driven in a rickety carriage on bumpy roads (Tate D19717, D19719; Turner Bequest CCXVI 85a).
