Catalogue entry

Lympne Castle and St Stephens Church stand on high ground about two miles west of Hythe. Drawings of them in this sketchbook include folios 54 verso–55 verso and 58 (D10503–D10505, D10508; Turner Bequest CXL 48a–49a, 51). None have been recognised until now. The castle dates in part from the thirteenth century. Ruinous in Turner’s day it is now restored and greatly extended. It is privately owned.
