Catalogue entry

On the left, the jetty of Jarvis’s Landing Place runs north off Margate’s Great Beach, with a ship under full steam in the Thames Estuary beyond. For more details of the Margate setting, see the Introduction to this subsection. One might fancifully imagine the couple silhouetted in the foreground as travellers who have missed the boat, or perhaps even the artist himself with his Margate companion Mrs Booth.
Technical notes:
The particularly pale blue paper used here is comparable to that used for another Margate view (Tate D24947; Turner Bequest CCLX 111).
Verso:
Blank; white paper or tape around edges with pieces of off-white paper still adhering from former mounting.
