Catalogue entry

Here Turner has rendered a cursory sketch of a figure in ‘brass mail’ mounted on horseback. The associated drawing is depicted on Tate D18403; Turner Bequest CCX 55, accompanied by inscriptions relating to both of these folios on Tate D18402; Turner Bequest CCX 54a. Turner has annotated the sketches with inscriptions (transcribed in full above) relating to the knight’s costume, a ‘green dragon’ on the banner in the background (see Tate D18402; Turner Bequest CCX 54a).
