Catalogue entry

With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled much of this page with a view along the Rue de Breda Gresset towards theThéâtre Graslin at Nantes. Tate curator Ian Warrell has pointed out that this drawing was probably used as the basis for a colour study; see Tate D24573 (Turner Bequest CCLIX 8).1 The pages of this volume feature many depictions of this Brittany city, a list of which is included in the sketchbook introduction. The right-hand edge of the page also features a coastal view with clouds and sailboats.
