Catalogue entry

This slight sketch of Newark Castle from across the Yarrow Water to the north offers a dramatic composition that somewhat exaggerates the height of the riverbank and nearby hills. The sketch was made just a short distance away from the view on folio 37 verso (D26167), as Turner passed the castle travelling south-east. It is one in a sequence of six sketches of the castle in this sketchbook that were made as Turner passed by on his way to Selkirk: folios 36–38 verso (D26164–D26169).
