Display caption

These three studies were painted on a dark blue handmade Swiss paper. Turner seems to have made twenty-one drawings on this paper. He did not use it for any other works and probably bought it in one of the small villages or towns on his journey. It was made by Richard Bocking & Company in a mill in Trarbach in Germany. Many of the works from this group just show the river and its surrounding hills, with an occasional boat in the foreground.
