Catalogue entry

With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled the top left-hand quadrant of this page with a drawing of a palatial façade. The building’s rusticated ground floor and portico colonnade are typical of the Baroque architecture of Paris and the Île-de-France which were the subject of extensive study in this volume. A list of these drawing is provided in the sketchbook Introduction for comparison.
