Catalogue entry

This sketch represents part of a view of Pozzuoli, an historic port within the Gulf of Naples, approximately eight miles west of the city. The vista looks east along the shoreline of the bay towards the port and the oldest part of the town, the Rione Terra, with its steep cliff. The composition spills over onto the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 90 verso (D15734; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 88a). For other sketches of Pozzuoli see folios 1, 72 verso–73 (D15555, D15698–D15699; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 1, 70a–71).
